I am interning with Jorge Cabrera, a 10th grade math teacher at my school. I had Jorge as a teacher in 9th grade and I really enjoyed his class so I thought it would be a good idea to intern with him, plus I also really enjoy math. I am very excited to meet all of the 10th graders at my school and help them in math, although I am nervous about making sure I am helpful enough.
In my first week at externship, I have had a lot of fun. On Tuesday I lead my first warm up lesson on the board in front of the class. In 1st period I was very nervous, but by the time we got to 4th period I had found my rhythm. I have already gotten better at public speaking.

A challenge I have encountered during internship was acclimating to the fact that, as a math teacher at HTHI, you have about 100 student at a time as opposed to just 50. This means that there is less time for each individual student. To combat this, I have tried to maximize my time when helping the students. My mentor has helped a lot by teaching me about what it means to be a math teacher.
Since I am interning at my high school, the transition has been very easy. I know how 10th graders think since I was a 10th grader two years ago, so I have had no trouble fitting in. However, I was worried that since I am not that much older than my students they would not show me as much respect. This has not been the case. I think it is due to the fact that I am comfortable taking control in social settings, and that they want to make a good impression in front of a senior.
In high school I have been so used to only seeing one side of each project. Now that I am on the other side of the project, I can see how much work goes into in from the teachers.
I have always thought I might want to be a teacher but it would be my second choice of a career. This externship has taught me what it would take for me to do it.
Meeting all of the tenth graders was really fun and Jorge was very helpful.
